The coin name hao (hào) is a loanword from the Chinese háo (Chinese: 毫), meaning a tenth of a currency unit. In addition, before the transition to the metric system of measures (1963), the traditional Vietnamese system was widely used in the country, in which hao was used as a unit of measurement of weight and length.
