COIN SOMONI — WHERE & WHEN (coins catalog: by names & emitents)
- REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN (2001-...): somoni = 100 diram
The somoni coin is named after Ismail Samani — the founder and first ruler of the powerful in 9th-10th centuries Samanid state (prototype of modern Tajikistan).
Interestingly, the currencies of neighboring Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan — som and soʻm, respectively — have somewhat similar names, but their etymology is quite different (not related to the historical figure).
