About the name of the coin riel (Khmer "រៀល"): there are at least two versions of the origin of this term — generally accepted and local, less likely.
Generally accepted: the origin of the name of the riel coin is associated with the widespread use of Spanish reals in ancient times, including on the Indochina peninsula.
Local version: the name of the coin comes from the riĕl ("small fish" in Khmer) — Mekong river fish (according to other data, it is about small fish that it was frequently caught in Tonlé Sap Lake and utilizing it as a barter for other things — a kind of substitute for money).
