CRUZADO NOVO as coin name
CRUZADO NOVO as coin name.
Cruzado novo — a temporary currency of Brazil during 1989-1990 and the corresponding coin.
By the way, it is interesting that during the 20th century the official Brazilian currency alternately had a number of different names: real, cruzeiro, cruzado, cruzado novo, cruzeiro real and... again real.
The cruzado novo was divided into 100 centavos. The centavo turned out to be more stable than the main currency — it has been invariably used as a small change coin in Brazil for almost 100 years in a row (at least nominally).
As for the usage of the cruzado novo, this is a rare case in numismatics when we talk about the denomination of a coin and at the same time we mean one single type of coin, namely, a circulating commemorative coin — 1 cruzado novo of 1989, dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the Republic of Brazil. There are no other coins that were in circulation at one time and were called cruzado novo.
However, there are two other types of cruzado novo coins: one of them is a pattern coin (1 cruzado novo, 1990; only 55 such coins are known to have been issued), and the other is a non-circulating commemorative coin (silver 200 cruzados novos, 1989; mintage: 30.000 pieces).
The name cruzado novo is literally translated from Portuguese as new cruzado (the currency was introduced as a temporary, transitional one).
